Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton has checked in for a drugs counselling course after it was revealed that he had been battling a drink and drug addiction.

Concerns over Mr Hatton's health and mental state were raised over the weekend when several national newspapers alleged that he had taken large quantities of cocaine on a recent night out in Manchester.

Mr Hatton's publicist, Max Clifford, explained that his client had been suffering from depression for some time, and that the drink and drug problem was a knock-on effect.

Following the revelations, Mr Hatton is thought to have met with counselling specialists on Monday to discuss his problems and to draw up a treatment plan.

According to The Telegraph, Mr Hatton's treatment plan will be organised around his other personal and professional commitments. The Telegraph adds that with the right treatment, specialists are sure he will make a full recovery.

Mr Hatton, who is known as 'The Hitman' among boxing fans, has not stepped into the ring since May 2009. His publicist, Mr Clifford, said that depression was the underlying cause of the drug problem but added that Mr Hatton was determined to recover.

"He met with the specialist today for four, five, six hours and he was told that his depression is severe depression and that he has a drink problem," The Press Association quoted Mr Clifford as saying.

"They are very confident if he does what they tell him with the treatment, therapy and advice, he can sort himself out. And he will do what they tell him," he added.
